Merle Van Dee, the pen name of a friend, came to me about a logo for his poetry on Instagram, as well as for possible use on future books. His previous logo was a simple monogram signature and I knew a monogram was going to represent him the best. The only request by the client was to incorporate a raven into the logo. Using precise breaks in the monogram and high contrast thick/thin in the serif font really helps the letters of "MVD" stand out. The little raven perched on the letters was given a "sketched" look instead of filled in solid to both bring attention to it and so there was some white to offset the heavy black lines in the monogram. The look of the raven also coincides with the "erased" tips of the stems in the the monogram to add a "weathered" appearance or the unevenness of ink drying.
