Sea Turtle
Sea Turtle
Six out of the seven species of Sea Turtles are classified as “vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered”, due to egg poaching, hunting, pollution, and climate change. These magnificent creatures already face striking natural obstacles throughout all courses of their life, from the threat of predators like raccoons, crabs, and birds that prey on beach egg nests, to fish and sharks once the hatchlings reach the ocean.
But now, with increasingly negative human impact on the environment, sea turtles face even harsher survival circumstances. Over-harvesting of turtles and their eggs for food and use of their beautiful shells has increased over the years. A study from Duke University in 2010 conservatively estimated that nearly a million turtles were “bycaught” as a result of gillnet, trawl, and longline fisheries. Of which, global annual estimates suggest 150,000 turtles are killed as a result. And it’s pretty common knowledge these days of how horrible plastic pollution has become for marine life. Add to that, ocean pollution from chemical runoff and oil spills, as well as beaches disappearing due to climate change, which reduces nesting areas, and the odds are increasingly tipped against sea turtles.
